The Silo

An exceptional facility for organising events, with spaces available for hire by companies and associations.

The Silo Quarter is made up of buildings which had been intended for demolition, but were saved by the architect.

On the edge of the car park stands the Silo, a strange monolith which has outlived the rest of the megastructure to which it belonged. This brick and concrete construction is accompanied by three other surviving buildings: the Garage, a former locomotive shed, the Workshops, where miners used to work and shower, and the Trémies (hopper room), a vast nave nestling into the ground, the height of the commanding wall which used to surround the site. The Silo and the Trémies were used to store the washed and sorted coal before it was dispatched. The screening and washing plant stood where the car park is now.

Today, the Silo Quarter is devoted to new uses:

The Silo, built on piles, is a solid structure which housed three large hoppers. It has two levels, giving a total usable floor area of 450 m2 (4844 sq.ft.). It now contains the brasserie-restaurant.

The former Garage, next to the Silo, has been converted into meeting rooms available for companies or associations to organise events and seminars.

Fronting on to the road, the Trémies provides space for temporary exhibitions or events.
