A world first !
A strange Zeppelin…
An innovative move
The vocation of the Palais des Images is to introduce a new form of audiovisual show. The removal of all architectural points of reference and the extreme relationship of scale to the spectator and the image mean that the public is totally immersed in the image, in a fully virtual world. This radically new technology, based on CCD sensors (similar to those used for camcorders) permits the direct use of digital images which can broadcast all the present applications - digital cinema, video, interactive systems (games), relief systems with a virtually unbeatable projection quality. The lightweight materials used, mainly backed by micro-computing applications, and the associated relatively low costs mean that the show can be changed at least once a year.
Images of more than 100 m2
A strange craft, a kind of great Zeppelin, the Palais des Images provides a 5-dimensional show lasting provisionally for 20 to 30 minutes. Incorporating sound and image, the type of presentation used is inspired by the video art devices known as "Cave". An audience of around 80 people is placed in a cube of side 12 metres whose surfaces form projection screens. The spectators are enveloped by giant images, with a simple principle: a single image occupies the whole surface of each side of the cube:
• 5 synchronous video images of 12 metres across x 9.6 metres high shown by overhead projection or direct projection over 5 of the 6 walls of the auditorium. One screen at the front, two at the sides, one on the ceiling, and one on the floor.
• 16 sound sources arranged round the cube and under the tiers, so that the sound fills the whole space. All the images, sounds, and light are synchronised. The room is plunged into darkness before the show starts. This makes for perfect projection conditions.
